Winning one national race is already a fantastique performance, winning two is already extraordinary, but winning 4 national races, almost in a row, how do we have to call this???
That’s what Michel Vanlint from Zoutleeuw managed to achieve. In the headtitle you can see on which races he was the best, and all this in less than one year time, unbelievable…. And there are still about 3 races ahead which are perfect for the pigeons of Michel Van Lint. Races with distance from 450 KM up to 500 KM are made for the Van Lint pigeons. We have to make the remark that the best 7 widowers of 2004 moved to the breeding loft.
All racing pigeons still have to race each week, widowers, hens, and young pigeons, all of them are basketted weekly. Between two provincial races they participate on a middle distance race, most of the time that is Toury.
The national winner :
Michel basketted 13 old pigeons, 36 yearlings and 35 young birds for the Nationale Bourges race. His first pigeon arrived at 1.51 pm and there were 3 pigeons home at 2pm. At 3pm there were already 41 pigeons home and at 3.34pm already 62 of the 84 basketted pigeons… Next weekend most of these pigeons will be basketted again, probably for the Chateauroux race.
The National winner, Barbara, has as father the 9012007/2002, which was a pigeon he bought at the auction of Verbeke Michael from Silly – Henegouwen. This pigeon was 10th acepigeon “La Colombophile Belge” and won a.o. following prizes:1st Pont, 687 p. 3rd Noyon 591 p. 4th Pont 434p. 6th Pont 751 p. 10th Pont 695 p. 11th Pont 389 p. Noyon is 135 km and Pont 177 km. A pigeon which is made for the short distance, strain Fourmanoir.
The moeder is pure Herbots out of the lines of Olympiad Soontjens X Acepigeon KBDB (see pedigree)
Michel, how do you win 4 national races???
Answer: Pigeon racing is a real passion for me, I have an eye for details and we have a good team of three persons (wife and daughter), which is occupied daily with the pigeons, for more than a few hours. Also you need good pigeons and a perfect loft (dry, enough light and enough aircirculation) and an observating and motivated fancier. “Someone who has to go to work daily can’t manage all this” says Michel, for the rest he uses some natural products as an extra support.
The first two rounds were housed all together untill their first flight out of Laon. They were taken away regularly with the car and got lighter food, because during the time together they got a lot of food because they had to grow well, but they had not enough energy to fly for a long time, because of the overweight. The problem with young pigeons is that they have to learn to get out of the big group of pigeons. That’s why Michel races both provincial and middle distance races in the club of “Petit Club Fleurus” in Obrafo Tienen.

Motivation of "Barbara"
The morning of the basketting the pigeons had to make a 25 KM trainingflight. The cocks and hens were allowed together. A young cock “Don Juan” was the one who had 2 hens. A box was placed on the ground to let the three pigeons fight and proof who is the strongest. “Barbara”, the future winner, was so jealous on the other competitor that she won the race, she arrived at 1.51 pm saturday afternoon… Like a racket she felt out of the sky. “Don Juan” was also raced on Bourges and was also among the first arrivals. The basketting of all the Bourges pigeons took 3 and a half hours. All pigeons were kept in sight and their reactions on their partner were noticed. That’s why the complete team is necessary!
One last remark of Michel is the way the pigeons are transported in the 21st century. Some trucks are still from the middle ages, he has difficulty to accept that, but he has no choice…
