Harinck-Poelmans - Genk (BE) A top loft in the long distance and extreme long distance for decades
In Desselgem and the surrounding areas, the Harinck family soon had a reputation that had to be held high in the distance races.
Not long after moving to Genk in 1967 the pigeon bug started to bite again.
Firstly he formed a duo with Jean Keppers and in 1972 he continued independently. The first years were raced with pigeons from Leon Reynders from Herderen. For the care of the pigeons Roger had the help of a few carers (Nicolaas Machiels & Jef Bijnens) who knew the tricks of the trade. The good results and victories piled up. Roger was satisfied with his pigeons, but wanted more … pigeons from Nouwen-Paesen (Grote Brogel) were introduced for breeding in the middle of the eighties. "THE NARBONNE" (5334799/92) and "DAUGHTER BARCELONA" (5134138/91) would form the basis of the loft.
These super breeders have produced many great champions. The first big hit was the 1°prize National Champion KBDB in 1998. The duo Harinck-Poelmans had already been active for three years. Son-in-law Kris joined Roger in 1995. Together they were to gather many places of honour. In the meantime the bloodlines were refined further with the input of pigeons from the lofts Wijnands & son (Maastricht) and Devos E&F (Deerlijk). Roger has never had a lot of pigeons in his lofts. A strong selection and the course of nature are the secrets of his loft. Long distance races and especially the Barcelona-races have always been preferred by this duo. Top places were collected over the years. The absolute highlight is the achievement of the 1° place National Barcelona 2007. In the meantime the team Harinck-Poelmans has been further expanded with Erwin, Roger has two daughters. Roger has been helped with the care of the pigeons and the lofts for years by Jean Biddeloo. Roger doesn’t have great dreams any more, but the pleasure in the pigeon sport remains … Or yet, transmitting the same life wisdom to his grandchildren so a he was given from his parents and grandparents.

"Now and then a pigeon was bought. I fit wasn’t successful, it was removed for 100%, even if it came from 100% correct and good fanciers. Every fancier will know how difficult it is to buy good pigeons" says Roger.
Inbreed :
There is a great deal of inbreeding done.
For example
: Niece x uncle or vice versa
Father x grandchild or vice versa
Sometimes a youngster is bred from the best pigeons out father x daughter or vice versa, in other words, half-brother x half-sister who are then in turn reserved for the breeding loft.
Benefit inbred pigeons
One preserves the qualities of het pigeon better. The youngsters are easier to judge during the selection after moulting. One can easily make a comparison with the parents and grandparents.

Medical guidance
- the compulsory vaccinations for all pigeons
- all racing pigeons are vaccinated for paratyphus annually (+- 1 March)
- further classic treatment for the head, tricho, coccidiosis
- during the racing season the necessary vitamins are given
- visit veterinary surgeon – before the breeding season and during the racing season

Feeding system
- Breeding pigeons; breeding mixture (food producer is changed regularly)
- youngsters: 50% breed and 50% depurative
- widowers: in the morning depurative, in the evening sport spread out with nibbling seeds, nuts
- after the race: 2 days only depurative
- before the race: 2 days only a full dish sport (3x day)
- all widowers are fed individually
-racing hens; sport mixture available the whole day, spread out with nibbling seeds and nuts
Loft consistency
8 breeding couples are coupled +/- 01 February and they carry on until the autumn.
The youngsters that are old enough are not trained until after Perpignan. They fly 2x 130 km after a few training races. In the past the youngsters were trained from all wind directions and with the same result.
By the training of the youngsters whether they arrive home early or late is not taken into account. Those that grow well and pass the hand selection are allowed to remain.
Real late youngsters are not trained until the following year, together with the youngsters, in other words also after Perpignan.
Why after Perpignan ? : because there will be no strays returning home during the races, something which is very stressful and disturbing.
Why breed late youngsters?
The disadvantage is that you have to wait a year longer for results, but experience has taught that this method gives very good results.

Racing pigeons
• 16 to 18 widowers
- coupled 01 April, 5 or 6 days brooding, eggs placed under feeding couples.
- training, self 3 times from 10 to 30 km then:
130 km : Chimay
200 km : Reims
280 km : La Ferté
420/470km : Gien of Salbris
720 km : Brive
- pigeons are then selected for the racing programme (generally 2 to 4 pigeons per race)
- those that are still for too long race a 200 km
- after Perpignan all the racing pigeons as well as the yearlings that have been moved are coupled and each breed 1 or 2 youngsters.
• Racing hens
- Race every week starting with the trainings races up to Orleans; Vierzon or Gien, they are then coupled 1 month before Barcelona, so that they will race Barcelona with a small youngster. They are no longer basketted but trained self several times up to 30 km. This used to take place just before sunset, but after the incident with Camille "750-01" in 2005 it was stopped. After being released just before sunset, Camille returned home the following day with a battered tail and bloody wing. Nevertheless a week later she raced 4th prov
from Barcelona against 2298 pigeons and national 29th with 12998 pigeons.

- The “Barcelona-hens” usually go back to Perpignan after Barcelona and also have a few short 30km races in between.
• Yearlings (16 to 18)
- are coupled on 01 April, raising 2 youngsters
- they are trained with a nest
- the yearlings are only raced 1x, namely from Jarnac 730 km
- some years they are not raced and only trained up to Bourges 460 km (after the season they are moved to the widower’s loft)
- the yearlings that have not been raced are coupled with 10 yearling hens which are prepared for the race from Souston with a nest (950 km) ideal preparation for Barcelona
