After their impressive result from Tours two weeks ago, in which they won the first three prizes at provincial level, all eyes were on the pigeon family of Rudi De Saer. They were the big favourites for this race so the pressure was on. Being regarded as the number one favourite does not mean they did not thoroughly prepare their team for the opening classic of the season. After all, your pigeons have to do the hard work.
Weather conditions were almost identical to the flight from Tours two weeks ago, with excellent weather and a slight headwind coming from the northern sector. Team De Saer could not have hoped for better circumstances. This was bound to be a great race for Rudi, who was starting to get nervous. A team of 31 old cocks was basketed for Limoges, while 2 old birds and 29 yearlings were to be raced from Bourges. Tension was building in the loft in Ruiselede.
The team from Bourges did really well, which raised high hopes for the pigeons that were basketed for Limoges. This was the overall result from Bourges:
Bourges club 341 olds: 14-27 (2/2) Bourges club 474 yearlings: 1-3-12-17-18-24-29-40-49-58… (14/29) Prov 3,324 yearlings: 1-21-115-177-204-244-274-333…
Based on the velocity of his fastest pigeon from Bourges, which would eventually win the first provincial prize, the first pigeons from Limoges were expected to arrive at around 5:30 pm. The fanciers, their eyes fixed on the sky and on the clocks, were starting to get nervous. Their birds were slightly later than expected, and not a single pigeon had arrived by 5:45 pm. The PIPA website mentioned that a pigeon of Wilson Dekens was the first to arrive home, and this means the De Saer pigeons were expected to come any moment too. They started to get worried. Would their pigeons be able to live up to the expectations? They started to lose confidence.
They were very relieved to see their first pigeon from Limoges suddenly appear at 17:46’10”. This pigeon was their fifth nominated De Favoriet, which was the fastest of the club! According to the PIPA website, their pigeon was expected to take second place at national level as well. Their first nominated Neymar landed about five minutes later, and several other De Saer pigeons were to follow soon after.
Team De Saer lived up to the expectations, achieving another impressive overall result. Their pigeons won an impressive number of top prizes, including 10 provincial top 100 prizes and 16 prizes per ten at provincial level:
Limoges club 332 olds: 1-3-8-13-14-18-19-20-22-23-27-32-40-50-55-57… (22/31) Provincial 3,434 olds: 1-5-26-46-54-58-62-63-79-82-102-161-226-270-300-332… (22/31) National 18,407 olds: 2-6-56… (expected national top 100)

The pigeon family of Rudi De Saer had another outstanding performance last weekend, including two provincial victories. This is what characterises a great champion: they are in top form when it matters most. Rudi De Sear has been able to live up to the expectations, and that is what makes him a national top class fancier. Impressive!
