Hello dr, my pigeons have problems with swallowing and have open mouth breathing when returning after flying?

Hello dr, my problem is while eating to swallow the food the pigeons strech their neck and twists his stomach. When flying on the loft they return with open mouth. I gave medication doxycicline, tylosine, deworming for hair tape and round worms, vaccination for Salmonella pt (colombovac), e. coli, cancer. I don't know what to do any more. If you can please help me. Thank you.

Dear Sir,

In the symptoms that you are giving there are 2 types of symptoms :

1/ After flying they are sitting with open mouth :

This is typically a respiratory problem , normally ornithosis . This has to be treaten with a treatment of 4 to 6 weeks with doxycycline.

2/ The second kind of symptoms with eating could be also a problem of digestion , or an infected throat or stomach. So here fore I would treat with f.e. lincospectine for 10 days.

So , if I have to advice I would give them 10 days doxycycline + lincospectine together , and then further on for 4 weeks doxycycline alone.

But to be honest , the best way to do is firstly let make an autopsy and analysis to know 100 % what the problem is.

Duifjes zijn hongerig, maar eten weinig en kunnen moeilijk slikken. Wat is uw advies?

Een collega liefhebber zit met een vrij eigenaardig gedrag van zijn duifjes aan de eetbak. Ze zijn steeds hongerig maar als ze aan het eten zijn zijn er steeds enkelen die stoppen met eten en precies de graantjes niet kunnen doorslikken. Dit zowel bij de oude maar voornamelijk bij de jong.e Ze lopen dan iets sneller naar de drinkpot maar krijgen toch hun kropje vol. De mest is behoorlijk en voor de jonge zelfs goed te noemen en afhankelijk van het menu kleurt dit wel een beetje anders. Bij directe controle van de duifjes die dan trachten hun graantjes door te slikken kan men de granen achteraan de keel zien zitten. Reeds controle gebeurd op tricho maar hij heeft ook blind gekuurd uit wantrouwen en toch blijft dit verschijnsel aanhouden.
Hebben jullie hieromtrent enig vermoeden of zelfs advies

De symptomen wijzen erop dat er waarschijnlijk door ontsteking van de slokdarm moeite is bij doorschuiven van de graantjes. Naast tricho kan ook candida, eventueel herpes en/of secundaire bacteriële infecties dit veroorzaken. Het lijkt me aangewezen de duiven hiervoor eerst te laten controleren. Ook een algemeen klinisch onderzoek door een dierenarts kan verduidelijking brengen voor het probleem.
