roller pigeon-head swollen, eyelids almost closed, pupils are down real low in eye. Bird was fine yesterday and today found sitting on floor. Could this be head trauma from a roll inside the pen? Bird won't hardly move, like it can't see. Any ideas?

Dear Madam/Sir,

Your diagnosis could be very accurate. A trauma of the head is very plausible, but I would have to be able to see the bird to be sure.

I found a bird dead in my loft. Do you know what could have caused this?

I found a bird dead in my loft this am. There was blood on his perch,and splattered on the wall about 1/2 inch from him. It looked like he fell off his perch and then blood splattered on the wall next to the floor. Bird was face down, no holes or tears in the pigeon itself. The bird was in A-1 condition yesterday. And was trained 7 miles.
Do you know what could have caused this?

Dear,
Acute death caused by loss of blood occurs amongst other things through wounds, internal bleeding or after the intake of certain toxic substances or plants.
In the practice I once saw a pigeon that had bled to death after a blood wart (= atypical pock) fell off. It is of course impossible to determine the cause of death by your pigeon without a thorough investigation. This will probably remain an isolated case. If not, an autopsy could give more clarity to the problem. As a matter of fact, it is not a certainty that the blood you found is the primary cause of the death.

I have a bird that flew straight into an obstacle in the loft..it had a immediate swelling on the front right chest, where the base of the neck joins the chest. It felt like a hard ball of muscle. It later became a wound on the outside also..I gave Gambasin antibiotics, and treated the wound externally..2/3 months down the line the birds condition hasn’t improved..The wound is now an external hard abscess sticking out of his body..The bird struggled through the malt, and I have stopped with the anti biotics more than a month ago..Some "boosters", vitamins and mineral where given with no joy..The birds eye colour is busy fading a bit now also. The overall vitality is not good. It is sitting with "puffed" feathers, and is sometimes "shaking" lightly. Doesn't I want to save this bird before it's too late. Do I operate and remove the wound/abscess, and what do I give to help its condition and recovery? Please help!

Hello,
When a bird gets an abscess it becomes very quickly a caseous hard mass. I think you better contact a pigeon veterinarian (if possible) who can remove the mass. The mass will not disappear on his own. The abscess is usually well circumscribed. Afterwards you can give antibiotics and vitamins for recovery.

Ik heb een oude vlieger die een luchtzak heeft. Gaat dit vanzelf weg? Ik zie voor de rest niets aan die duif. Hij vliegt gewoon mee rond met de vliegers.

Normaal best een kleine insnede om de lucht te laten ontsnappen en de duif in een kleine ruimte ( eventueel een duivinnenbak ) brengen zodat ze geen inspanning hoeft te doen; dan krijgt de wonde de kans om te helen

Wir haben eine Taube, die rein äußerlich vital und gesund aussieht. Gleichwohl scheint sie keinen Gleichgewichtssinn mehr zu haben. Ihre Bewegungen deuten darauf hin. Vor einiger Zeit hatte sie am Hals eine kleine kahle Stelle. Deshalb bekam sie in den Nacken ein spezielles Tropfmittel für Brieftauben (gegen Milben). Kann das der Auslöser der Gleichgewichtsstörungen sein?

If the medication was administered two months ago that won't be the reason. There is a possibility that he has an infection with paramyxo, paratyfus or an other bacteria that can infect central nervous tissue. It is also possible that he has had a trauma (hit his neck or head hard against something) and that is why he is behaving like that. I would advise you to give him an injection for paramyxo and treat him for 10 days with Baytril 2ml/liter.
