BERLAAR-HEIKANT
In this beautiful district of Berlaar
lives Johan De Belser. The region has flourished
especially through the presence of the diamond industry in Antwerp. Johan
inherited the love for pigeons from his father and grandfather. He was really
born in a "pigeon’s nest".Jammer

Berlaar-Heikant 
In deze prachtige wijk van Berlaar woont Johan De Belser.
De streek die vooral floreerde door de aanwezigheid van de diamantindustrie in
het nabije Antwerpen.
Johan kreeg de microbe van zijn vader Victor die ze op zijn beurt meekreeg van
grootvader. Hij werd dus werkelijk geboren in een "duivennest". Het was
de periode dat het vitessespel hoogtij vierde. Pa

It was a period when the short distance was very popular. Dad Victor
is a very good short distance fancier and this has always translated into many
champion titles, mainly in the local pigeon club of "Verbroedering Berlaar-Heikant".
In 1979
grandfather passed away.
Johan decided continue with the same lofts together with his cousin Werner Dierickx.
They owned some excellent pigeons, for example the "Old Blue"
received many prizes.
But also his interest for middle and long distance grew.
After getting married he built a house and of course a pigeon loft.
The first 2 years he played exclusively the short distance, but soon the longer
distances followed. At first there were middle long distances, but after a
while the distances have extended from 450 to 700 km.
Especially Bourges at the end of July is a classic race that every fancier in Berlaar wants to participate in.
Every year top prizes are won by his old pigeons, yearlings and youngsters.
It was obvious that Johan didn't want to be an "average" fancier.
He didn't have to go far, because he knew FLOR ENGELS AND SONS.
Currently, the colony De Belser consists in 70% of ENGELS pigeons.
METHOD
The 24 strictly selected breeding-couples are paired
around the end of November. The eggs are taken away and put with feeding
pigeons. This way, one can have in a short period of time, 2 rounds of young
birds from the breeders. But then the task of the feeding pigeons isn't finished
yet. During the young bird races these pigeons are coupled with the young
birds.
Widowers:
The racebird team consists
of 33 widowhood cocks,
that are 10 old birds,
23 year birds
and 7 year widowhood
hens.
When the youngsters are 14 days old the hens are taken away and the youngsters
are left with the cock.
On March 15 the couples are put togeter again and
they can breed for 5 days.
The hens are always shown to the widowhood cocks before the race. For the
middle long distance it only takes 5 minutes. The pigeons are in the basket for
one night, they leave on Friday evening and return on Saturday.
For the hens as well as the cocks that race long distance, this is different.
They stay together half an hour or one hour before they are basketted.
"This
way they are leaving much more at ease" says Johan.
The hens are locked the whole day and they train for half an hour after the
widowhood cocks.
Then they are called in and after dinner they are locked again to prevent that
they pair among eachother.
Youngbirds :
About 100 youngsters are bred for own use. Hens and cocks are
parted after a few weeks. When they fly around for about 14 days they are
darkened down from 17.30 until 7.30 in the morning.
In Mid May the young hens are paired with the old
cocks. They stay together until they are paired well, but they cannot lay eggs.
The young cocks are paired with old hens, they can breed for about 5 days.
The program looks like the following: 2 times Quievrain
(100 km) and 2 times Noyon (200
km), then 3 middle distance flights to end with the provincial Orléans (400 km) and Bourges (480 km).
After this the races for young cocks are stopped. The young hens then go to
Vichy.
The fact, that Johan has a perfect system is proven by his results.
In 2001,
71 % of
his old birds and yearlings won prizes, as well as 60 % of young birds.
Nourishment and medical care
During the flight season no light nourishment is
given.
The pigeons get a light diet mixture. Towards the end of the week the
nourishment becomes stronger.
After they return home they are given electrolytes and they are disinfected.
At Wednesday they receive vitamins.
The veterinarian is consulted 3 or 4 times a year. Before the breeding, at the
start of a new racing season with old birds and at the start of the youngbird flights.
Once a month they are treated against tricho and head
infections.

Unfortunately Johan did not sent in the prizes of DEN 500 for the Olympiad Long Distance,
because after our calculations we see that he would have won by far the FIRST PRIZE
